ADS device, company and complaints

Device
The Determinator, plus the Determinator II, which adds a camera.
Taking a test
Before the car starts, you blow into the handset.
What it does
The handset detaches; prompts are spoken in English and Spanish; it reminds you daily when calibration is next.
Company
Alcohol Detection Systems Technology is a Mindr brand, as Intoxalock is.
BBB rating
Not BBB accredited, it scores A+ (see the Phoenix, Arizona listing).

Its BBB profile shows complaints and how the company responded. Sources: the device page, test guide and company information on ADS's site.

The company says it has supplied interlocks nationwide for over 15 years (see reference).

Life with an ADS device

ADS: from booking through removal

  • Book the install: call 888-528-2919 or leave your number, and ADS or another installer in your state sets a day.
  • A service center hosts the install visit. The company gives its install price by phone; across all companies, MADD's typical install runs $70 to $150. The handset gets wired to your ignition before you leave.
  • Your state sets the schedule for calibration visits.
  • Once your state gives the all-clear, the device comes off; removal steps.

The 12-month column sums a full year of the quoted lease, the install charge and any set-up fee. If a company doesn't list an install price, it applies MADD's typical range (marked *), and it notes in the cell when no price is posted anywhere. "Quoted by phone" is the label for prices a company gives you on a call. By MADD's rough estimate, a month costs between $60 and $80 and installation between $70 and $150, so roughly between $790 and $1,110 over 12 months (between $720 and $960 with free installation).
