Oklahoma's interlock program

The state's program goes by the name IDAP, and the Board of Tests is in charge of it. An ignition interlock device is required for IDAP unless you have a medical exemption.

Every DUI conviction in the state, even a first one, requires an interlock.

Driving again with Class D privileges

Joining IDAP is how eligible drivers regain Class D driving privileges. The Board of Tests runs the program, but only Service Oklahoma can issue your actual driving privileges, so you'll deal with both.

How long do you keep the device?

The time depends on how many DUI offenses you have: at least 180 active days for a first, 365 for a second and 730 for a third or later. Whatever your situation, you also have to satisfy the Board's participation criteria.

If you've been through this more than once, the program periods can't run at the same time. Every offense brings its own program length, and the total time adds together.

Wrapping up the program

To wrap up IDAP, you need zero interlock violations across your final 90 active interlock days. The last stretch is the one that counts, since a violation near the end can stop you from finishing.

Leaving the device in permanent lockout means the program stays unfinished, so it's worth sorting out a lockout right away instead of waiting.

State law also makes it illegal for anyone to tamper with, unhook or bypass an interlock without the proper certification. Work on the device, or on the wiring near it, belongs in the hands of a certified installer.

Cost of an interlock in Oklahoma

There are two costs to plan for. One is the $150 IDAP enrollment fee. The other is the device itself, which you get through a lease and service agreement with an interlock company. That agreement can charge for installation, monthly service and removal.

Most people pay an installation fee plus a monthly charge. MADD's national averages put installation at $70 to $150 and the monthly charge at $60 to $80. A first offense of about 6 months comes to around $430 to $630 in total.

Prices differ from company to company, so before you book, ask for the full price with installation, monthly service and removal included.

Is there a medical exemption?

Yes. Someone with a medical exemption is excused from both the program fee and the interlock device itself. If you don't qualify, plan for both the fee and the device.
