Ignition interlock in Iowa

If you get an OWI in Iowa, which stands for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, an ignition interlock is what lets you stay behind the wheel. After a first offense, you have to have one on each car you use if you want a temporary restricted license, the limited permit that lets you drive while your regular license is suspended.

Prices are each company's national starting price. The 12-month column adds a year of that price, the install price and any set-up fee, or MADD's typical $70 to $150 where no install price is posted.

MADD's national range: $70 to $150 to install, then $60 to $80 a month, or $790 to $1,110 for a year.

Staying on the road after a first OWI

The Iowa DOT requires anyone seeking a temporary restricted license following a first offense to get an interlock put on each vehicle they drive. That means a car you borrow or share with someone, not just the one registered to you. No device, no restricted license, which means no legal driving to work or anywhere else while the suspension lasts.

The install is the piece that makes everything else possible. Call now and we'll pass your request along to an installer working in Iowa.

How long the device stays in with repeat offenses

If you have 2 or more OWI offenses, the Iowa DOT says you must keep an interlock on each car you use for 365 days once your driving privileges are restored. And if you're issued a temporary restricted license, the device has to remain installed for a minimum of 365 days starting on the day that license is issued, or for the life of the license if it runs longer.

Getting your license back

When it's time for reinstatement, you'll have to show an interlock is installed on every car you use, when that rule applies to you. The state asks for that proof before returning your license, so scheduling the install early keeps things moving. A single quick call gets the appointment booked with a company that installs devices where you live.

Drivers under 21 and the zero-tolerance rule

Iowa calls it a "zero tolerance" revocation when a driver under 21 shows a blood alcohol reading of at least .02 but below .08. This revocation is its own thing, separate from an adult OWI, and it starts at a far lower threshold.

Daily life with the device

Under state rules, the device won't let the vehicle start if it reads 0.025 breath alcohol or higher. That number is low, so even one small drink can keep you off the road.

The device also needs calibration now and then, where the installer checks it so the readings stay accurate. Go more than 67 days since your last calibration and the engine won't start, so it's worth booking each visit before that day comes.

A lockout is when the device keeps the car from starting and only the installer can clear it. Under those same rules, a lockout kicks in inside of 5 days once 2 or more violations show up in a single check-in window.

Medical waiver for 2025 and later offenses

If your OWI offense happened on or after Jan. 1, 2025, you can apply to skip the interlock requirement if a licensed doctor verifies a medical condition, the Iowa DOT says. This applies when a condition genuinely makes using the device a problem, and the doctor must confirm it.

Interlock cost in Iowa

Nationwide, MADD says fitting the device usually runs $70 to $150, plus a monthly fee of $60 to $80 for as long as you have it. Over a full year, that adds up to roughly $790 to $1,110.

Companies price things differently. Intoxalock's monthly lease starts at $54.99, Smart Start's at $59.99, and ALCOLOCK runs $60 to $90 per month. A few, like Dräger, don't post a price and only share it over the phone.

What would Senate File 2261 change?

A legislative fiscal note lays out what Senate File 2261 would do if it passes:

  • A driver with no prior OWI revocation on record would use an interlock for 180 days before a full license comes back.
  • The device would block driving at a 0.04 setting.
  • New removal rules could stretch the interlock term for drivers who rack up several violations within a set window.
  • Providers would be barred from charging a fee for ending the term early.

None of this is law yet, so the current state rules still hold until that changes. However the bill turns out, one quick call connects you with an Iowa installer ready to fit your device.
