MADD's national range: $70 to $150 to install, then $60 to $80 a month, or $790 to $1,110 for a year.

Who has to get one?
In Oregon, every DUI conviction brings an interlock requirement, and that holds true even for a first offense, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Drivers in a diversion agreement need the device for at least 1 year. After a conviction, the minimum is 1, 2 or 5 years.
Any car you drive on a public road falls under the rule. That means rentals and cars owned by friends or family, too.
Picking a company
The state police do not endorse any device, manufacturer or service center, so the choice is yours. LifeSafer is one company the Oregon Health Authority has authorized.
Costs vary from one company to the next, and the state directs people to contact the companies for pricing. Rather not call around yourself? Send us your request and we'll hand it to a company that covers your part of Oregon to book the appointment.
What the device costs
Nationwide, MADD estimates $70 to $150 for installation and $60 to $80 each month, but Oregon prices vary by company.

How the device works
Before the car starts, you provide a breath sample. Oregon's set point, the level that blocks the start, sits at 0.020% breath alcohol. The camera takes still photos, not video. A picture is taken when a sample is requested, when you give one, and whenever a violation gets logged.
A vehicle with an interlock needs regular device service.
Getting the device removed
Your driving record keeps the requirement until a No Negative Report goes through properly. That report reviews the device logs for violations and usually looks at the final 90 days of your requirement.
In diversion, you can request early removal from the court once you have a 6-month No Negative Report. After a conviction, early removal isn't available.
What happens after a violation?
If DMV sees a report showing noncompliance, tampering, circumvention or certain other violations, it will notify you that your requirement is being stretched out. Circumvention means trying to beat the device.
