Do you need one?

There is no law across the state that forces you to install one. What decides it is your court order or the letter that came with your license. Start with that paperwork, since it spells out your requirements.

If it turns out an interlock is required, everyone in the program has to use a device the Attorney General has chosen. You don't get to shop around for a brand.

Getting into the program

To be eligible for interlock testing, you need 3 things. First, a current driver license or a work permit. Second, proof that you carry financial responsibility. Third, a vehicle on which you're named on the insurance policy and are the principal driver.

That last item counts for a lot, because once you're in interlock testing you aren't allowed behind the wheel of any other car. The device gets fitted to the vehicle you list, and that's the only one you may drive.

What it costs

All costs for putting in and running the device fall on you unless a court order says different. You pay the vendor for installation and operation, plus the program's fees: a $40.00 enrollment fee and $1.00 a day.

Based on national averages, installation and monthly device charges could total about $790 to $1,110 over 12 months, and South Dakota's program fees and inspections are extra. Your installer will give you your exact price.

Paying on time is worth your attention. If your account falls behind, the vendor has to notify the office that runs your program at least 24 hours ahead of pulling the device out or shutting it off.

The first days after installation

Your participation agreement names a Contact Person, who checks your installation and decides when the device can come out. Unless you make other arrangements, bring the vehicle to your Contact Person right after installation so they can check the fitting.

From then on, you return for monitoring every 60 days, or on whatever schedule you're given. Every one of those stops is a periodic inspection, and each one costs $20.00 at the moment.

The day-to-day breath tests

The device must be set up to test you twice daily or more, with the two checks spaced roughly half a day apart, including days the car never leaves the driveway. It logs each result and snaps a picture of you every time you blow. The photo proves who gave the sample.

Skip one of the scheduled twice-a-day breath tests and it gets reported. The tests still come due on days you don't drive, so it helps to fit them into your morning and evening routine.

Taking the device out

Once it's in, the device stays with your vehicle until the Contact Person gives the go-ahead for removal. Ask your Contact Person before you plan to have it taken out.
