Ignition interlock in Utah
Utah requires an ignition interlock for every DUI conviction, even a first one. If the court has told you to get a device, a state-certified company has to install it, and you don't have much time to show the court your proof.
- On probation, you file proof the device was installed within 30 days of the order
- Every failed breath test or skipped check tacks 60 more days onto your term
- While on probation, the device gets checked no less than once every 60 days
- Drive without an interlock you were supposed to have, and the state revokes your license for 1 year

Which drivers in Utah need one installed?
Utah applies this rule to every DUI conviction, not just to second or later offenses. A conviction within 10 years of a prior one means the court must order an interlock for your vehicle.
Saying no to a breath or blood test triggers it too. When the state takes your license for refusing a chemical test, you become an interlock restricted driver. From that point, you may only drive a car that has a working interlock installed, even if you were never convicted.
Utah's approved installers
Not just anyone can put the device in. The Driver License Division certifies which companies are allowed to fit these devices in Utah. Only a company on the division's certified list can install your device, so check that yours is on it before you book.
If you're on probation, you have 30 days from the court's order to show proof of installation, so it pays to book early. Give us a call and we'll pass your request to an installer serving Utah, who can set up your appointment.
What does an interlock cost in Utah?
When you're on probation with an interlock order, the costs of leasing or buying the device, installing it, and keeping it serviced and monitored are yours to cover.
MADD's national averages put the installation itself at $70 to $150, with monthly fees of $60 to $80. Over a full year of use, the total lands somewhere around $790 to $1,110. A few companies list their own entry prices, with Intoxalock starting at $54.99 monthly and Smart Start at $59.99 monthly.
Can't manage the price? You can ask the court to waive it. The way to do that is an affidavit of indigency, a sworn statement saying you don't have the funds. The court has to confirm you truly can't pay before the costs go away.
Keeping your restriction from getting longer
Every breath violation adds 60 days to how long you must keep the interlock. The same happens if you skip a calibration, the routine visit where the installer confirms the device still reads accurately, or if you miss a monitoring visit.
While you're on probation, the device must be monitored at least every 60 days, and the court can require more frequent checks. Staying on top of your checks keeps your term from growing.
Ending the interlock requirement sooner
Pull the device out before your restriction runs out and you undo your progress. Your license gets suspended again until an interlock goes back in and you pay another reinstatement fee.
Some drivers do have a legitimate path. If your DUI was a first offense, the Driver License Division is the office to petition for removal, and it may agree when you meet the conditions.
Is there a medical exemption?
Yes. A medical exemption may be available to you when a health condition gets in the way of using the device and blowing a deep lung sample.
Driving without a required interlock
The penalty here is steep. A conviction for driving without an interlock you were supposed to have means the state takes away your driving privilege for 1 year starting from the conviction date.
Getting the device in on time helps you avoid that loss.
